CITY OF HOPE: Choose Intelligence, Bravery, and Compassion
AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ART INSTALLATION
1. Humans make art, invent machines, love deeply, and share joy.
2. Emotional damage is caused by loss, abuse, war, and loneliness.
3. We behave in violent, uncaring, and self centered ways.
4. To heal we tell our histories, cry often, and listen to others.
5. For our survival we must be the most generous,
6. to the people by whom we feel the most slighted.
City of Hope is a Brooklyn skyline. I took a photo of the Brooklyn skyline from the Jamaica Bay Greenway bike path and divided it into 24 buildings. The window patterns on every building in City of Hope is inspired by an actual building in Brooklyn. Every tree is also inspired by a real tree in Brooklyn. I photographed hundreds of trees and tree branches. There are branches from Greenwood Cemetery, Prospect Park, Floyd Bennett Field, Many street street trees, and the lily from my garden.
Through this artwork I hope to illustrate the beauty of daily struggle, the necessity of humans learning to care for our environment, and anything else the viewer finds for themself. I hope that you can take from it what you need and enjoy its aesthetic.
